Spectral Hardness Decay with Respect to Fluence in BATSE Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده
We have analyzed the evolution of the spectral hardness parameter, Epk (the maximum of the νFν spectrum) as a function of fluence in gamma-ray bursts. We fit 41 pulses within 26 bursts with the trend reported by Liang & Kargatis (1996) which found that Epk decays exponentially with respect to photon fluence Φ(t). We also fit these pulses with a slight modification of this trend, where Epk decays linearly with energy fluence. In both cases, we found the set of 41 pulses to be consistent with the trend. For the latter trend, which we believe to be more physical, the distribution of the decay constant Φ0 is roughly log-normal, where the mean of log10Φ0 is 1.75± 0.07 and the FWHM of log10Φ0 is 1.0± 0.1. Regarding an earlier reported invariance in Φ0 among different pulses in a single burst, we found probabilities of 0.49 to 0.84 (depending on the test used) that such invariance would occur by coincidence, most likely due to the narrow distribution of Φ0 values among pulses. Energetics - Spectral correlations vs the BATSE Gamma-Ray Bursts population
Recently proposed correlations between the energetics of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) and their spectral properties, namely the peak energy of their prompt emission, are found to account for the observed fluence distribution of all ‘bright’ BATSE GRB. Furthermore for an intrinsic GRB peak energy distribution extending toward lower energies with respect to that characterizing bright GRB, such correlat...
متن کاملThree types of gamma ray bursts
A multivariate analysis of gamma-ray burst (GRB) bulk properties is presented to discriminate between distinct classes of GRBs. Several variables representing burst duration, fluence and spectral hardness are considered. Two multivariate clustering procedures are used on a sample of 797 bursts from the Third BATSE Catalog: a nonparametric average linkage hierarchical agglomerative clustering pr...
متن کاملA Variety of Decays of Gamma-Ray Burst Pulses
The main target of this study is the GRB light curve during the decay phase of long, bright pulses. As shown by Ryde & Svensson (2000; hereafter RS00) approximately half of these decays can be described by a power law ∝ 1/(time). This happens for cases when the hardness-fluence correlation (HFC) is an exponential function, Epk(Φ) ∝ e −Φ/Φ0 , and the hardness-intensity correlation (HIC) is a pow...
متن کاملOn the Variety of the Spectral and Temporal Behaviors of Long Gamma-Ray Burst Pulses
We find and study a variety of the spectral-temporal behavior during the decay phase of the light curve of long and bright pulse structures in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Even though only a small fraction of observed bursts exhibit such pulses, these are of interest to study as they reflect individual emission episodes during the burst. We have previously found that for about half of these decays,...
متن کاملCorrelative Characteristics of Double-Pulsed Gamma Ray Bursts
As the most energetic explosion in the universe, the gamma-ray burst (GRB) presents many unanswered questions. Comprised of photons with energies of around 100keV, the GRB is difficult to detect and can only be observed using space telescopes. In a 1990s survey with the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), data on over 2700 gamma-ray bur...
